Fitz-Gerald Consolidates While Campion Rises In Rankings

While Australia's Sarah Fitz-Gerald has strengthened her position at No1, England's Cassie Campion has risen to No3 in the new June Women's World Squash Rankings, announced today (30th May) by the Women's International Squash Players' Association (WISPA).

Fitz-Gerald, the four-times world champion from Melbourne, impressively swept to victory in the four WISPA World Tour events in the USA this month. Her straight games victory over New Zealand's world No2 Carol Owens in last week's Seattle Open final brought Fitz-Gerald's career total to 57 titles, equalling the record of her now-retired compatriot Michelle Martin.

The in-form Australian, unbeaten in 47 straight matches, will create a new record if she successfully defends her Australian Open title in Adelaide at the end of June.

Campion, the 1999 world champion from Norfolk, celebrated her 40th WISPA final appearance at the Hurghada International in April, then reached the semi-finals of the Seattle Open where she lost to Fitz-Gerald.

The 29-year-old former world No1 has replaced Leilani Joyce in the top three. The fourth-placed New Zealander, who has been out of action all this year following an Achilles rupture in December, is expected to make her long-awaited comeback at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, in July.

Denmark's Ellen Petersen, runner-up in the Odense Open in her home country in April, moves back into the top twenty at 20.
